FAQ
Q. Why Peco Log Homes?
We are an honest company with a sincere desire to give you the best that we can in a unique log home and one that you will always be proud of.
Q. Why should I buy a Handcrafted log home?
All one really needs to do is take a tour of one style (handcrafted) versus the other (milled) and we are sure you will know what is right for you. We really believe that there is a place for both products in the market and it is really up to you as the consumer to know what you really like in a log home. Balance your desires with a cost effective budget and perhaps location to decide what style you will choose. Frankly speaking, we have been the in business long enough to have many friends in the log home industry and we are well aware of the need for both styles of homes. You need to choose, as you know what your dreams are. We can only help you make them a reality.
Q. What types of logs would we recommend using?
In a very wet climate we would recommend the use of Western Red Cedar because of it ability to resist the degrading effects of repeated exposure to moisture. For a drier climate we feel that Douglas Fir and Engleman Spruce are very suitable and almost half the cost. Douglas Fir is very strong where long spans are required and Spruce is well known for its beautiful light honey color.
Q. How much will my log house settle?
The average shrinkage of the house will be about 4″ in four years. This depends on the local climate and humidity.
Q. What is the R-Factor of a Peco Log Home?
A properly built log home will exceed a 2″x 6″ clad with brick by a great margin. Logs have the inherent “ability to retain heat” after initially warmed up. This is called “thermal mass”. Consequently the reverse applies in the heat and the home will stay approximately 10-15 degrees cooler in the summer than the outside temperature. This often negates the need for air conditioning. The bigger the log house the more the `thermal mass’ comes into effect. Not enough can be stressed here though about the good craftsmanship necessary in the building process.
Q. Will I need to chink our home?
Normally with the methods that we use at Peco such as the full scribe W-groove and stress cutting, our logs will stay tight. It is quite normal to expect some checking of the logs after a few years time but they will stay extremely warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Again the key to a draft free log home is expert craftsmanship and with our 25 plus years of experience, we have a thorough understanding of construction methods.
Q. Is there someone that comes to help with the re-assembly process?
Once your log shell is completed at our construction site each log end is tagged with a numbering system that allows uncomplicated assembly of the shell. We send a supervisor to oversee the the re-assembly of the log shell on the owners site. You will be required to supply at least a 60ft crane with a capacity of a minimum 17 tons.
Q. What are some blueprint pricing guidelines?
We can provide you sets of working drawings for $1.25 a sq/ft. but the owner is required to have their own engineered stamp from their particular state.
Q. How long does it take from the time we order before we can expect the arrival of our log shell?
Depending on size and complexity, it takes our crews about 2-3 weeks per 1000 sq.ft of home depending on the time of year and certain weather conditions may factor in. Also, as the time of year also dictates, spring and summer are our busiest times so you may have to get in line.
